Landscape Irrigation Course Outline:
To successfully complete the course, a student must demonstrate a basic understanding of landscape irrigation including rule compliance, basic design and hydraulic principles, irrigation plan interpretation, backflow prevention requirements, and installation techniques.
The course is not to be taught in any manner which shows preference to any brand, make, or model.

Course Goals and Objectives
The goals and objectives of this course are to provide the student with fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to design, consult, sell,  install, maintain, alter, repair, service, or supervise the installation of a basic landscape irrigation system. The lessons taught in the courses are those required to be successful in the State Exam.

Recommended Supplies:
  • non-printing/non-programmable calculator
  • note taking supplies
  • eraser
  • eraser shield
  • engineer scale
  • a shape template for drafting
  • bow compass.
    Most supplies can be found at office supply and arts stores.

Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License Requirements:
Education:
High School diploma or General Equivalence Diploma

Work Experience:
Two years of experience. Work experience must be in an approved area which includes, but not limited to:
-Operating or maintaining a public drinking water system;
-Installing or repairing residential, commercial, or industrial drinking water treatment equipment;
-Installing or repairing lawn irrigation systems;
-Performing activities requiring a master or journeyman plumbing license;
-Installing or servicing fire suppression sprinkler systems and lines;
-Operating or maintaining a domestic wastewater treatment facility;
-Performing health inspections that requires a registered sanitarian; or
-Performing duties approved by the executive director
Acceptable Work Experience Substitute:
Applicants with a High School diploma or GED may substitute up to one year of experience with one year of college credit (32 semester hours) or 20 hours of approved training in addition to the required 40-hour backflow prevention assembly testing training course.

Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester - TCEQ Course Code # 1200 - 40 Hours
Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) Course Outline:
The 40-hour course for backflow prevention assembly testers (BPAT) must include information on the proper procedures for testing and repairing backflow assemblies. The course shall include an introduction to the theory and principles of backflow prevention and cross-connection control, and recognition of the regulations, statutes, ordinances, and codes that affect BPAT testers and water purveyors.

    You are welcome to bring your test kits to class; however, three and five valve deferential gauges are available for use during class.

Completing 40 hours of course #1200 provides education credit for the following licenses:
- 40 hours for licensed Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers (BPAT)
-100 hours for an applicant for a Plumbing Inspectors license (through TSBPE)
-12 hours for Customer Service Inspectors (CI), Landscape Irrigators (LI), Irrigation Technicians (IT), Irrigation Inspectors (II), Water Operators (WO), Wastewater Operators (WW), Water Treatment Specialist (WT)

This course should contain no less than 16 hours of instruction. 
The course is not to be taught in any manner which shows preference to any specific product or service.

Course Goals and Objectives
The goals and objectives of this course are to provide the student with fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to install, maintain, alter, repair, service, or supervise the installation of a basic landscape irrigation system. Such work is done under the supervision of a licensed irrigator.

Important Information 

**As of September 1, 2017, HB 1508 [Exit the TCEQ]  requires TCEQ approved training providers that provide educational programs (training) which prepare an individual for issuance of an initial occupational license, to notify each enrollee of the following:
  • the potential ineligibility of an individual who has been convicted of an offense for issuance of an occupational license on completion of the educational program;
  • the current guidelines issued under Texas Occupation's Code, Section 53.025 by any licensing authority that may issue an occupational license to an individual who completes the educational program (TCEQ Regulatory Guidance document RG-521);
  • any other state or local restriction or guideline used by a licensing authority to determine the eligibility of an individual who has been convicted of an offense for an occupational license issued by the licensing authority (none applicable to TCEQ); and
  • the right to request a criminal history evaluation under Section 53.102.
  
**Individuals who believe that they may be ineligible to obtain an initial license or registration due to a conviction or deferred adjudication may request an evaluation of their criminal conviction history prior to applying for the license or registration. Evaluations will not be performed for individuals that have no criminal history, already have a TCEQ license or registration, or for those that are not actively seeking to obtain a TCEQ Occupational license or registration.
Individuals that have committed a crime in the following categories and are applying for a new high-risk license or registration (BPAT, CSI, Landscape Irrigation, OSSF, and WTS) are especially encouraged to request an evaluation before applying.
  • An offense that directly relates to the duties and responsibilities of the licensed occupation (example: Fraud/Theft connected to business, negligence in occupation)
  • An offense that does not directly relate to the license but was committed less than 5 years before the application for a license;
  • An offense listed in Texas Code of Criminal Procedures (CCP) 42A (Murder, Injury to a child, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Robbery)
  • A sexually violent offense, identified in CCP 62.001.

**The TCEQ must pre-approve your license application before you can register for an exam. If approved, you will receive an approval letter in the mail which you must bring with you to your exam. If you don't have a copy or lose your approval letter, you can print a copy of your application status showing "Approved". Approval of an electronic application takes approximately 3-4 weeks if all supporting documentation is provided and there are no deficiencies.
